BUILD Awards – Most Innovative Bespoke Modular Construction Service

BUILD Awards – Most Innovative Bespoke Modular Construction Service

Offsite Construction methods are revolutionising the way that buildings are built…buildings are being delivered faster and cheaper, yet the quality is still the same, if not better. For its traditional bricks and mortar counterpart, it is clear that this is a threat. But for schools and organisations where disruption must be kept to a minimum, cost-effectiveness is of the utmost importance and safety is paramount, it is obvious that modular construction is the way forward.

Jewell Academy

Jewel Academy, Bournemouth

Jewell Academy required a new modular school building as an extension for it’s rapidly expanding school population.

The client required an additional 14 classrooms, along with a hall suitable for PE and drama, several group rooms, a library and an administration area. With small children on-site, it was important that disruption was kept to a minimum, and therefore Modulek had to provide a solution that could be mainly delivered during the school holidays, and could make the best of the client’s tight budget.

The design team at Modulek worked with the client to develop a bespoke solution, that would create a learning environment that would inspire generations of learners. This meant that the space had to be utilised in the best way possible, so that teachers and students could work together to achieve their full potential. This has resulted in an ‘outstanding’ rating from OFSTED, and the overall school culture has improved, so much to the point that teachers have said that ‘they don’t want to go back to their old classrooms, which are new classrooms!’.

Right from day one, Modulek worked with the headteacher and governing board, teachers and students at Jewel Academy. Modulek never left the client’s side, going on their journey from concept and design, all through the way to handover day.

The school building was made up of 73 modules, a large number of modular bays…these bays, once assembled together don’t even resemble the traditional idea of grey, uniform, modular buildings. These bays are dispelling the myth that modular has to be bleak, dismal and uniform…instead they are showing how far modular construction has progressed! This is a building that is smart, inspiring, and airy, and is something that is truly unique, and reflects the school’s hopes and aspirations for the coming years.

Modulek’s full steel space frame design gives the building a 60 year design life, which are incorporated with key design features such as Kingspan cladding, traditional brick facade, decorated, jointless, smooth walls internally, and expansive smart screen walling systems, creating a working environment, that will inspire the schools students to strive even more for success.

Modulek is revolutionising the modular industry, with their bespoke turnkey solutions, and it is this that has resulted in Modulek being awarded the ‘most innovative bespoke modular construction service’ award, in the Build 2019 Construction and Engineering Awards.
